Great Dickens Christmas Fair & Victorian Holiday Party
Weekends, Nov. 23-Dec. 22, 2013
10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Get into the holiday spirit! The Dickens Fair is a San Francisco tradition going back 35 years that brings London, circa 1865, at Christmastime to life. The 120,000 square feet of the Cow Palace event center gets transformed into the snow-covered “streets” with the twinkling lights of shops, taverns, and pubs all aglow. Talented staff and performers dressed in period costume interact with visitors bringing delight and laughter along.
This family-friendly extravaganza is a great place to find special holiday gifts. Many shops and booths house handcrafted items from Artists in Residence—look for the A.I.R. seal. You’ll find leather goods, candles, crystals, ceramics, jewelry, art, clothing of the Victorian period, and of course gorgeous ornaments to deck your own home.
Food includes a delightful array of international flavors. What’s the Dickens Fair without fish and chips? The fragrance of cinnamon almonds sold at stalls through the Fair is simply too good to resist. Enjoy a healthy and delicious Greek salad at Acropolis Greek Food. Ales, wine, buttered rum, hot toddies, and mulled wine are all available, as are sodas, water, and even milk and cookies.
Ticket prices for the Dickens Fair vary. The first three weekends cost $25 for adults (13+), although you can get a discount if purchased on the website of $3 to $5. Weekends 4 and 5 cost $30. Children’s tickets are $12 at the gate but you can get them for $10 if purchased in advance. Kids under 5 are free. If you plan to go more than once, the Pickwick Club Season Pass is $90. Purchases made online incur a 99-cent convenience fee per ticket.
