Shortly after the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a playful group of sea lions began frequenting the Fisherman’s Wharf area on the waterfront in San Francisco. Safe from predators in a protected environment and supplied with plenty of food from the Bay, the sea lions decided to make Pier 39 their new home. Today, these personable creatures are one of the city’s top attractions.
This year, we’ll be celebrating the 26th Anniversary of their arrival to Pier 39 with a slew of fun activities and entertainment from Friday, January 15 through Monday, January 18. Highlights of the celebration include Sea Lion Encounter Walking Tours every day at 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm. These free tours depart from the sea lion statue, located west of the Pier 39 Entrance Plaza. After the tour, enjoy a celebratory treat, along with discounts from select merchants in the area. You can also take the Sea Lion Pledge, and watch the boisterous animals on the Sea Lion Webcam.
