A beacon of art in San Francisco since its founding in 1895, the diversity of the 27,000-piece collection at this striking museum in Golden Gate Park spans history across the globe. Perhaps most impressive though are the curated de Young exhibitions that only grace the space for a limited time. Upcoming shows in 2015 you’ll want on your calendar include:

Embodiments: Masterworks of African Figurative Sculpture

January 31st-July 5th
Featuring 120 treasures from sub-Saharan Africa, this exhibit offers a rare, enlightening glimpse into a profound world of art with spirituality at its core. Nearly every sculpture hails a different culture, representing roughly 110 distinct groups, as each magnificent piece tells the story of its people.

Janet Delaney: South of Market

January 17th-July 19th
Focused on the radical changes and forceful gentrification that occurred in the South of Market (SoMa) district of San Francisco during the 1970s and ’80s, this collection of over 40 pictures shines a light on a dark chapter of Bay Area history all too often forgotten.

Botticelli to Braque: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland

March 7th-May 31st
This exclusive exhibit features 55 priceless paintings from masters of the art dating back to the Renaissance, some on display for the first time ever in the U.S. Botticelli, Vermeer, El Greco, Raeburn, Monet, and van Dyck are a few artists whose work lies at the heart of the show.
