24th Anniversary of the Sea Lions Arrival

Celebrate the Sea Lions in San Francisco Kids of all ages love sea lions and San Francisco is one of the best places to see them. The City has been welcoming them at Pier 39 for almost 24 years, when they arrived in droves after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Each year, the flippered fellows arrive at the marina’s K-Dock to lounge in the sun, relax with their buddies and entertain visitors with their funny antics and loud barks. Protected by the City and the Marine Mammal Center, the sea lions enjoy an ideal living situation that offers safety from predators like sharks and Orcas and abundant food like herring all year long. Varying in numbers between 300 and 1,700 (depending on the season) the sea lions are a popular spectacle that keeps visitors coming back to see and enjoy them year after year. Celebrate these fun loving sea mammals along with the Pier 39 staff and the Marine Mammal Center team during their 24th anniversary commemoration party this January 17th-20th. Spend some time with the sea lions, then enjoy dining, shopping and fun on Pier 39 or explore the waterfront for fabulous views of the San Francisco Bay. And, if you’re planning to come visit the sea lions, why not extend your stay for a weekend escape at the luxurious Hotel Griffon? Our European-inspired waterfront hotel on the Embarcadero is located just 1.5 miles from Pier 39 and other popular attractions in vibrant San Francisco.
